As part of my income, I am a substitute teacher at our local elementary school. Since the school day starts at 7:45, many of the teachers allow the students to bring a mid-morning snack. I consider this a very good ideal, especially when many of the students leave home without breakfast. I have noticed that many times, the snacks are not healthy or nutritional. They will consist of chips, cookies, sodas, or other high fat and sugar items. Not all students will bring this type of snack, but the majority does. Our school system does has a food policy in place which list which food or drinks can be handed out in class but states nothing about what a child can bring and consume on their own.
My question is to other teachers, moms, mentors, or parents should schools become more involved in teaching healthy eating habits at the elementary age.
