About Me:
I have always considered myself healthy. I thought I knew a lot about how to take care of myself, but I decided to learn more about nutrition and health after a series of health crises of my own. After a physical, my doctor prescribed folic acid because she found that I was at risk for heart disease. "But don't worry," she said. It's no big deal." Then I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux, then IBS. I was worried. I had come to New York with an MFA, ready to take the theatrical world by storm. Now, six years later, I was calling myself an actor and a playwright, but working a "day job," waiting for that magic moment when my real life would begin. And now suddenly I was falling apart! One day I woke up and realized that this was my life, and it was just flying by unattended. I had to do something. After a lot of searching, I decided to go back to school.

Now I am a Board Certified Holistic Health Counselor and Reiki Master, and a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (accredited by Teachers College/Columbia) and studied with Reiki Master Motoko Kawasaki. In addition to my private practice, I teach lectures, workshops, and group programs and act as the Senior Editor of Delightfully Healthy News, an online holistic health newsletter. I am a contributing blogger at The Mindful Eater (www.themindfuleater.com) and have also written for “Ask the Holistic Health Expert” about living successfully with IBS and Acid Reflux on PlanetThrive.com, an online holistic community.

What I love about my work, and my life, is that I get to bring my whole self to it. The study of people, their inner workings, motivations, dreams and desires has been my life’s work as an actor and playwright. Now I bring that passion to my practice. I specialize in helping busy people reduce their stress, overcome chronic illness, and feel healthier and more energetic. I feel honored to be able to use my talents to help inspire my clients to live their best lives.

Here's an interesting article I found on care2.com, listing 25 diet drugs that the FDA is warning about.

Wordless Wednesday: Art on Park

New York City is full of art. It's one of the things I love about it. I snapped some pictures of the...um...heads(?)...thumbs(?)...oh yeah, ART, on Park Avenue on my walk yesterday. You can find them here. Enjoy!

Affirmations? Affirmative!

My friend Sally told me an amazing story yesterday. As she was getting off an elevator on the 45th floor, her iPod slipped down the crack between the elevator and the floor and disappeared. After the shock wore off, she called the building's maintenance department, and they told her they would look for it, but it hadn't shown up yet, and she shouldn't get her hopes up. Three days passed. She called every… Continue

Food is my Friend

"That cake is evil!"

I found myself saying that recently. And then I came to and realized that I had allowed myself to be hypnotized by my old beliefs. I grew up with slogans like "A moment on the lips, forever on the hips," and "You can never be too rich or too thin." My mother was perpetually on a diet, and, meaning to show her love, persuaded me that parts of my body were less than perfect, too. (And mainstream culture - I just accidently typed "meanstream." Hmmm - only reinforced… Continue

Failure is an Opportunity

I read that this morning and it hit me right between the eyes. It's from the Tao Te Ching, by way of Stephen Mitchell.

Failure is an opportunity.

What if I lived my life knowing that? What would that be like?

Hi Jody, welcome to Iowa Avenue. Your story is inspiring on many levels--certainly least of which is where you decided to take matters into your own hands and determine both your physical and other needs into the present--not into some far-away dream. Looking forward to your participation at this wonderful and supportive community.

Hi Jody :-) Your story sounds familiar. I educated myself on health and nutrition after my 4 back surgeries. I wanted a natural way to cut my pain and inflammation in my back and with the help of a friend I came across some all natural, organic supplements that fit the bill and reduced the inflammation ~ 70%. After reading about your struggle with IBS and acid reflux I wanted to let you know of a supplement that has helped folks with those health issues. This supplement contains sea vegetables and aloe vera, both of which help your body overcome IBS and acid reflux. Here is the website where you can find out more information on the product. www.liquidhealth4u.net
I have also attached the data sheet for this product. I would appreciate your feedback and comments.
Take care Jody :-)BodyBalance.pdfBB ingredients.pdf

Hi Jody, thank you for your comment back :-) The Body Balance product turned my health around, I swear by it! LOL I am glad you found your own healthy lifestyle to overcome your health issues...now if we could just educate the rest of the U.S. ...our healthcare system would be about HEALTH CARE not SICKNESS management!
Take care,
John :-)
