About Me:
I am a writer, an artist, and a Pacific Northwest native. In addition to authoring several blogs and numerous Web sites, I have spent the last 10 years publishing possibly the most boring books that you've never read...those lovely pieces of disposable literature known as software programming guides. I am certified in a bunch of even less interesting computer science and security whatnots, and was the original writer of the official Xbox Developer's newsletter, X and the City, under the pseudonym The Xbox Cabana Boy.

My artwork has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Pasadena Weekly, and solo exhibitions. My panoramic technical diatribes can sometimes be read in the internals of your computer, although, as with most of the things I've published, you'll likely never see them because you stopped reading when you saw the word "software." And I'm OK with that. Otherwise, you can see much of my work on my blog, Metroknow.com, my health blog, AlmostFit.com, and humor pieces on my new self-indulgent humor site, bedarkened.com.

Would you eat a Quarter Pounder if it didn't say McDonald's on it?

Apparently the answer is yes.

In Japan, McDonalds is experimenting with a new technique in marketing: "No-branding". Essentially they are removing the ubiquitous Golden Arches and scary clown face brand to see if people will be more or less inclined to eat at "Quarter Pounder shops" than at a traditional McDonalds.

What has been the reaction so far? This article points out that folks are lined up out the door - at this point. Read more… Continue

Sitting at the tipping point...I need a Jamaica Me Crazy

I hate to say that this is one of those classic, "So um I haven't posted in a while, but here goes" posts, but well, it is.

Good. Got that off my chest, so now I am free to complain about something else. I seem to be whining and complaining a lot, but my readership over on Almost Fit actually spiked by 140 new subscribers in a single day, so I must be doing something right.

Unfortunately, what I am not doing right, is breaking through… Continue

Do you eat together as a family?

I posted an article on Almost Fit today on the benefits of eating together as a family. I wanted to give Iowa Avenue folks a little additional personal info, and ask you: What is your family eating culture like?

Here's a little history, and our current practice:

Growing up, we went through brief… Continue

Who needs a treadmill when you've got Briggs and Stratton?

I spent the day today mowing our yard. This may sound trivial if you have not seen our yard. I was mowing for almost 8 hours - we are on an acre, and due to some semi-sadistic character flaw that I have since gotten treatment for, I apparently thought it was a good idea to use mowing my lawn as exercise, so I purchased a lawnmower. Now it is self-propelled to a degree, but it really only propels itself when the bag is 90% empty. And when you don't mow your back 1/2 acre for like, a month, or… Continue

Friday Stress Relief - Laughing Yoga

I think most folks have seen this, but it is one of my favorite stress relieving videos on YouTube. Even funnier? He is serious - and laughing. I used to live in the Pasadena area, and he has a Yoga studio on Lake Ave. in Pasadena.

If you haven't seen it already -… Continue

It's great to have a writer/artist in residence at Iowa Avenue. Your blog is great, and I hope to hear all about a healthy lifestyle in the Pacific Northwest.

Welcome to Iowa Avenue.

Thanks, I'm glad to be participating. I am still trying to figure out the benefits of the site, so any pointers to articles on how being a member of IowaAvenue is helpful (beyond meeting a nice group of folks) would be greatly appreciated. Also, any ideas on where then name Iowa Avenue comes from?
