Week 1, Day 3

So I work out at the UD gym and they've got limited hours this week because students are leaving and winter break is headed in. 8-5 Monday through Friday this week... and I work 8-4 in New Castle. Basically, no way I'll get there before it closed on Monday. Pleh.

Luckily, I had a Historic Review Board meeting tonight, so I could go into work late. Got to the gym right at eight, did the run (today was 5 min warmup, 60 sec running, 90 sec walking for the last time), changed, and… Continue

Week 1, Day 2

So I did drive about three hours today, but not as much as I thought I'd have to. I managed to fit in going to the gym (especially since this weekend Chris is starting to shoot his movie and it's going to be nuts). Today's workout was the same as yesterday's-- 5 min warmup walk, then 60 seconds running, 90 seconds walking until I hit 25 minutes.

Everything went well! I paid attention this time to the distance: 1.71 miles. I'll pay attention to that as the "running" part begins… Continue

Week 1, Day 1

So I started the Couch to 5K program today! Woo. The first day consists of a 5 minute warm up walk, then 60 seconds of running followed by 90 seconds of walking until you hit 20 minutes. It's a little unclear if the 5 minute warm up walk is included in the 20 minutes, so I didn't include it. All together, I was on the treadmill for 25 minutes.

Hmm-- maybe I should keep track of distances here. My walk speed was 3.7 and my run speed was 5.0. It's not too fast, but the website… Continue

Woooo running program Couch to 5K

So I finally started back running again in late November and it's been going well. Depending on where I am and how I feel and what the weather's like, I run inside or outside. Now that it's been getting seasonably cold again, I'm back indoors when I'm in Delaware at the UD gym. Problem with this variance is the lack of measurable progress (look at me all Urban Affairs and stuff-- my research methods professors would be proud).

So I decided to start a running program through the… Continue

Human powered gyms

Okay, so my MA thesis is on green rehabilitations of rowhouses in Baltimore, and as part of my research, I come across tons of new applications and inventions trying to encourage energy efficiency. Some are great, some are crap. This new project, called "Powered by You" is attempting to take the energy generated by people running on treadmills and on stationary bikes and convert it into electricity to light the gym.

Steve Clinefelder, from the University of California, says that… Continue
