Checking In

The last few days I stayed at the Holidiseased Inn in scenic Sicktown. It actually wasn't as nice as it sounds. You would think I would enjoy all of the lying around and general laziness required and laid out in Sicktown's city bylaws, but actually it put a bit of a cramp in my leisure time. I could have been enjoying all of the freedom from housework and childcare responsibilities (Glen was on "vacation" and did most of the work this week) by writing tons of blog posts and playing Sims,… Continue

Return of the Life Auditor

Many of us have audited courses in university, and some of us have been audited by the IRS. However, there’s only one documented case of a person auditing other people’s lives. That person is Henry Wilbanks, class of "07".

A senior at USC, Henry Wilbanks changed majors a record 25 times. And that was just during freshman orientation. His academic advisor, Mr. Tanner, was running out of advice for this wayward student. He was about to give up on Henry when he decided to send him to… Continue

Why do we do what we do and what can we do about it?

Its been awhile since I've posted or visited the site. I keep telling myself I'm too busy. But I question my motives. I suppose it comes down to shame. I had set such wonderful goals and did so much research and started off so well then one day something came up and the routine got disrupted, then another thing and another thing and before u know it, I back to my old habits. And whats worse, I've been putting on weight even faster bec everyday I tell myself this is my absolute LAST day for… Continue

My Comments on Paul McKenna's "I Can Make You Thin"

I finally caught his show - two of them. I'm not an emotional eater so I won't comment on that show. But the other one - he lists four golden rules:

1. When you get hungry - eat.

2. Eat what you want.

3. Eat consciously.

4. When you're full, stop.

1) Obviously we all know what this means. He says to make sure we are actually physically hungry and that we're not eating because it's there. If you ignore your hunger… Continue

If you can’t go to Hawaii, bring a Slice of Hawaii to You

Pineapple is one my favorite fruits, especially mixed into a fruit salad. It adds color, texture, and unmatched sweetness.

The word "Pineapple," is derived from the word “pina,” which was used to describe a pine cone by the Spanish. Eventually, it was introduced to the Hawaiian…

My daughter needs more cupcakes!

This is a recent photo of my daughter, Rima, which I used in this morning's post on AlmostFit (18 perfect excuses to avoid buying good food). She just turned one, and even if you can't tell from this shot, she LOVES cupcakes. However, it turns out that she needs to be eating a few more of them.

On a recent visit to the pediatrician for a checkup, we…

The Aristocrat of Vegetables - Asparagus

Asparagus is a slim green vegetable that has many health benefits attributed to it.

This vegetable is sometimes referred to as the aristocrat of vegetables. Many Greeks and Romans not only appreciated asparagus for its taste but also believed it possessed medicinal properties--from alleviating toothaches to preventing bee stings.

Of course, such beliefs were purely mythical, but asparagus…

Being a 'health nut' can be cool in the eyes of teens

I learned this past week that my 17 yo son's friends call me a health nut. At first I wasn't sure how to take that because I sort of heard him say it without much emotion or follow up comment. So later I decided to have this conversation so I could find out if it was said in a positive or negative tone.

My son, we'll call him Jteen, was discussing food with his friends, something he does frequently because he's always hungry. He's a growing teen with the metabolism fast enough to… Continue
