A Great Day

I'm not sure how today could have gone any better for me. Every variable in my weight loss and fitness goals were running on all cylinders today. Today was Halloween so of course in the lunch room there was doughnuts, cider and enough candy for 1000 people. Instead of indulging I just stuck with my healthy meals and snacks that I packed for the day. Once I got home I had a healthy dinner (lean steak and veggies) and then my wife and I passed out candy to the kids. After that was done I went to… Continue

Emotional Eating Tip of the Week: VOTE!

There is something I say so often that my coaching clients can probably quote it in their sleep. “When things feel out of control, focus on taking care of what you CAN control.” This is a much more effective strategy than our tendency to try to avoid or muffle what’s going on by overeating and creating an ice cream-induced coma.

There are so many things around us today that may feel out of our control and that are contributing to the stress and worry that we carry. Here (again) is my… Continue

Willpower and weight loss

When you are trying to shed extra pounds I do not recommend you rely on willpower alone. Clear out the unhealthy foods that weaken your resolve to be heart healthy and lose weight out of your cupboards. Once you have established good habits and can “trust yourself” to enjoy the occasional goodie in moderation, bring a few treats back into your home. Until then, removing temptation is the better route to success!

What Foods Have Carbs?

What Foods Have Carbs?

By Paul Hayhurst

What foods have carbs depends on the type of carbohydrates you are talking about. There are two types of carbohydrate - simple and complex. Carbs are our body's energy food allowing our brain, muscles and central nervous system to function efficiently. The two types of carbohydrate are found in different foods and give our bodies a different kind of…

How to Survive the Holiday Season With Your Diet Intact

How to Survive the Holiday Season With Your Diet Intact

By Dan Cantor

I like to call the fall holiday season the "eating season" which starts on Halloween and ends on New Years day (hopefully). I know at least one person who stretches this back to Labor Day. Well, now you see the problem! We're tempted with so many great eats and treats, parties, out-of-town visitors, and good feelings that it's easy to get…

Litter Destroys Beauty

Growing up, I was taught not to litter, and that was a little while ago.

When my children were growing up, I also taught them not to litter.

However on my walk yesterday, I was appalled at the amount of litter here in Los Angeles and on our streets. Of course, I’ve always known that there was litter, but during yesterday’s walk, it just hit me harder than normal.…

Vote for Better Food this Election!

We'll all have our own key issues in mind when we go to the polls a week from today. From the New York Times.

But for those of us interested in promoting healthful eating -- in our own homes and in homes, schools and restaurants across the nation -- that list might include the way our next president, members of Congress… Continue

60 Days until Christmas = A 15lb Weight Loss

Since Iowa Avenue’s inception, I’ve been working to lose 15lbs, but like most people, my scale goes up and down, with my weight loss effort.

I know what some of you are saying:

“15lbs that’s all? That’s nothing. I need to lose 50lbs.”

Maybe it’s 75lbs or a 100lbs

In principle, it’s all the same.

Fewer calories in, and…

Make Your Halloween Healthier

Halloween is just around the corner, which means trick-or-treating, and I stress the "treating". Eliminating candy completely at Halloween is not a feasible option and why spoil a fun holiday the whole family should enjoy? However, by taking a few simple steps you can limit the amount of candy in your home and maintain a balance between holiday treats and your health goals.

  • Are you throwing or attending a Halloween…

Choose your doctor wisely

Even though this research is based on a small number of women, their stories recounted in the study are compelling.

"I had to wait like a half an hour just for them to get my blood pressure because they had the wrong cuff. So then they had to go looking for the other one. The nurse was running around the office, 'We need the bigger cuff. She can’t fit the other,' and I was just like, 'Oh, my gosh!' " said one of…

Do you stop and smell the roses?

A rose by any other name

Do you take time out of your day to relax? Do you really taste your food? Do you look at your surroundings?

Do you take the time to listen?

I sometimes wonder if life is passing each of us by, or do we really notice the little things. Are we in such a rush to get through the day that we miss small…

Don't Be Fooled by the Media - Avoid Sugared Free Drinks Too

Chicken Soup for The Heart

I read some interesting research lately that I want to share related to chicken and blood pressure.

We know that blood pressure is a significant risk fact for heart disease and stroke. It’s estimated that around 1 billion people worldwide live with high blood pressure. Being able to control high blood pressure through food selection is very important.

The collagen in chicken is being researched for use as a blood pressure medication, with actions similar to ACE inhibitors… Continue

Your Health isn’t a Contest; it’s a Way of Life

On Tuesday’s The Biggest Loser, there were many important life lessons that I feel compelled to share.
