I finally caught his show - two of them. I'm not an emotional eater so I won't comment on that show. But the other one - he lists four golden rules:
1. When you get hungry - eat.
2. Eat what you want.
3. Eat consciously.
4. When you're full, stop.
1) Obviously we all know what this means. He says to make sure we are actually physically hungry and that we're not eating because it's there. If you ignore your hunger pains and don't eat, then your body goes into "starvation mode" and retain everything you eat afterwards. Plus your chances of binging are greater.
2) Eat what you want. He says to eat your favorites - pizza, pasta, cookies etc. but again, eat until you're full. He reasons that skinny people eat what they want and maintain their weight. He also says that you won't have that feeling of deprivation.
3) Eat consciously - don't do other activities while you eat because you tend to eat more. That means no eating while watching tv, talking on the phone, or at a move. Eat slowly, chew food around 20 times, put your fork and knife down between each bite and savor your food. The key is to eat slowly. He says you will eat less because you'll be able to feel the signal of being full when you're paying attention. He conducted some experiments proving this to be true.
4) When you're full - stop. Self explanatory.
He gives a hunger list and we should try to live our lives in the middle....
1. Physically faint
2. Ravenous
3. Fairly Hungry
4. Slightly Hungry
5. Neutral
6. Satisfied
7. Full
8. Stuffed
9. Bloated
10. Nauseous
So the bolded (3-7) areas are the boundaries in which we should live our lives and avoid going into the other areas. I think this is excellent advice because I know myself, I only eat when I'm starving. So when I eat, it's usually because I've reached #1 which for me is Nausea (I get sick if I DON'T eat) and #2 Ravenous. And I've eaten many times to where I've reached #9 - Bloated. So I'm going to make a conscious effort to avoid the other areas.
About being full because you eat slowly - I read somewhere that it takes about 20 minutes before your body recognizes that it's full. I wonder if that's why eating slowly makes you eat less?
I don't like the idea of eating whatever I want. Even though a "skinny person" eats whatever they want, I'm not a skinny person so I have to decrease my calories, period. Besides, I've been eating like a skinny person (not over eating, just eating what I want and a lot less than my friends mind you) and look where it got me! So I can put my knife and fork down between each bite and eat consciously but I'm going to eat healthy food instead of the junk. Yes he had people that lost the weight but he didn't say how long it took. I just think that eating what you want would slow down the weight loss SIGNIFICANTLY and frankly, I'd like to lose this weight before all my hair turns gray. :)
Anyway, he said something about his upcoming show that he will teach us a technique that will make us want to exercise. I'm definitely going to stay tuned for that.
