Join Iowa Avenue’s 10,000 Steps Program

Two of Iowa Avenue’s members, TB and Debo Hobo, have joined a site called Walker Tracker.

Since I am a staunch advocate of walking and keeping active, I decided to do the same. Walker Tracker is a site that allows you to set your goals for walking, tracks them, and puts them in a chart form which you’re able to cut and paste into your Iowa Avenue profile. Debo Hobo’s goal is 10,000 steps per day, and TB’s goal is 11,599. I’ve set my goal at 10,800 steps. Remember that everybody is different and that different goals are perfectly acceptable.

I’m inviting all Iowa Avenue members to join us.

Steps necessary to join are:

  • Go to the Walker Tracker site, register (it’s free), set up your profile, and start tracking your steps.
  • After you finish the registration process, you’ll be able to get the HTML code for a widget to cut and paste into your Iowa Avenue profile via the text box.
  • Sharing your progress is half the fun of walking. During the registration, you’ll be asked what pedometer you use. The one I have, is an Omron Model HJ-112, which I use everyday. To purchase whichever pedometer you want, you can find a wide variety on Amazon.
  • Put it on in the morning and wear it all day long. You’ll be able to join us in our Walker Talker routine and measure the number of steps you take in the course of your day.

Some of you aren’t walkers, however if you dance, jog, or even walk to the market, the steps will be recorded.

We are huge proponents of exercise and staying active, so let’s see how many miles Iowa Avenue members can come up with in a day, week, or a month.

I’ll try to post our collective results every time period.

How far are 10,000 steps anyway?

The average person's stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile; and 10,000 steps is close to 5 miles.

My personal goal is to walk to walk across the country to Washington DC.

According to Google Map Pedometer, that’s 3667 miles; based on my goal of 10,800 steps per day, it will take me about 680 days to walk there.

As they say, the longest journey starts with the first step…………………….)

So what do you have to lose? Except some calories?

Choose a place you’d like to walk, and then go there. Set your goal, get going, and keep us updated, because

After all, it’s about a healthy lifestyle!

I love Walker Tracker. Gives me another sense of accountability.

The only way that would be a picture of me would be if there was 10 inches of fresh snow on the ground too. Don't think it's me.

O.K. guys, you have your way of tracking steps, how do I get one that counts the laps that I swim in the pool, other than me counting? - Just joking, I stopped counting years ago, I swim based on which routine I want to do--e.g., freestyle, backstroke, breast, butterfly, etc.

First step taken...I have signed up with Walker Tracker. Been meaning to get a pedometer for sometime but never got round to it - I calculate by estimation :-)
