K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Sorry, I don’t mean to insult anyone with the stupid part. That’s just how the acronym goes.

Anyway, what does this have to do with your fitness routine? Everything!

The biggest reason women fail to adhere to an exercise program is because they make it too complicated! You get all motivated and excited about a new routine and the great results you’re going to get. You sit down and plan it all out: weights 4 times per week, cardio 6 times per week, new recipe book, grocery list, calorie counter, supplements to buy, and on and on and on.

If you were to add up all those hours you have to spend not just working out but also doing all that extra stuff, you would realize that about 10-15 hours of your week is spent on your new exercise program.

And how long do you think you are going to be able to dedicate that much time? One week, 2 weeks, maybe you’ll make it the first month. Then what? It becomes overwhelming and you stop. You don’t just drop certain aspects of the program, you drop it all.

I hear people talk about The Biggest Loser show. How great it is these people lose all that weight. Those trainers and that system must be fantastic! Well, not really. It is great that the men and women on that show lose weight. But it’s not because the trainers have some magic program. It’s because the contestants have 24 hours per day to focus on themselves and their fitness while they are in the program. No distractions. No family commitments. No job responsibilities. They are isolated and only need to focus on 1 thing…their fitness.

How realistic is that for most people? I bet if that was the only thing you had to focus on day in and day out, you would get awesome results too.

But it’s not. You have family. Job. Career. Kids. Friends. Social commitments. Partners. And on and on and on.

The solution? KISS!

Keep it simple, stupid! Here are a couple ways to get started...

--Focus on intensity in your workouts, not duration. Work hard, not long.
--Add intensity techniques to your workouts. This keeps the duration shorter.
--Do interval cardio training. Skip the long, slow stuff if you want results.

I'll be sharing more tips on my blog over the next couple of weeks.

Carpe Diem!

I think that's very wise and good advice, Bobbi. I've seen people make these elaborate work-out plans only to stop a week later. I think that the KISS theory is a very good one.

Thanks David. I know it has worked well for myself and many of my clients. Even as a trainer and someone passionate about fitness, I personally have a lot of other priorities in my life. Sticking to the basics regarding my fitness has really helped me to reach my fitness goals without compromising other areas of my life.
