About Me:
I have always considered myself healthy. I thought I knew a lot about how to take care of myself, but I decided to learn more about nutrition and health after a series of health crises of my own. After a physical, my doctor prescribed folic acid because she found that I was at risk for heart disease. "But don't worry," she said. It's no big deal." Then I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux, then IBS. I was worried. I had come to New York with an MFA, ready to take the theatrical world by storm. Now, six years later, I was calling myself an actor and a playwright, but working a "day job," waiting for that magic moment when my real life would begin. And now suddenly I was falling apart! One day I woke up and realized that this was my life, and it was just flying by unattended. I had to do something. After a lot of searching, I decided to go back to school.

Now I am a Board Certified Holistic Health Counselor and Reiki Master, and a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (accredited by Teachers College/Columbia) and studied with Reiki Master Motoko Kawasaki. In addition to my private practice, I teach lectures, workshops, and group programs and act as the Senior Editor of Delightfully Healthy News, an online holistic health newsletter. I am a contributing blogger at The Mindful Eater (www.themindfuleater.com) and have also written for “Ask the Holistic Health Expert” about living successfully with IBS and Acid Reflux on PlanetThrive.com, an online holistic community.

What I love about my work, and my life, is that I get to bring my whole self to it. The study of people, their inner workings, motivations, dreams and desires has been my life’s work as an actor and playwright. Now I bring that passion to my practice. I specialize in helping busy people reduce their stress, overcome chronic illness, and feel healthier and more energetic. I feel honored to be able to use my talents to help inspire my clients to live their best lives.

What are your goals?
Continue to improve myself by living in a healthy and sustainable way, staying present in my life, challenging myself and continuing to learn and grow. And by walking my talk in this way, I hope to inspire others to do the same.
What is your current exercise routine?
Yoga, as soon as my broken foot heals. And walking.
What diets have you tried?
I believe now in eating a whole foods, organic diet, and really listening to my body so that I can give it what it needs. In the past I have used The South Beach Diet and, many moons ago, weight watchers.
What is your favorite book?

A Whole New Meaning to Sweat Equity

So I'm innocently scanning the front page of MSN.com, and see this: Sweatiest City, Where do locals excrete 26.4 ounces an hour. Yeah, I gotta click. Turns out, it's Phoenix (sorry Arizona). My parents used to live there, so I can attest to the heat. San Francisco was the least sweaty (who was it who said that the coldest winter he ever spent was summer in San Francisco? Mark Twain, I think). Interestingly (or not), I've l… Continue

Wordless Wednesday Walk

Since I'm a woman of words, it's going to be hard to keep my mouth shut, but I'm going to try... Here's what I saw on my walk today:

Looking for the Latest Old Thing

I read this article in the New York Times today, and it got me thinking. I was thinking about how Western Science keeps "discovering" Eastern Science and trying to make it fit a Western model. It seems that any "new" thing (read ancient practice) gets glommed onto, picked apart, dissected, and applied in bits to heal whatever mig… Continue

Some Things I Believe

Diets don't work in the long term. Everybody's different. Whole, organic food tastes better. It's not only what you eat, but how you eat that matters. Baby steps climb mountains - they're the only way I've found to create lasting change. Everything we take in can be nourishing - food, relationships, careers, exercise routines, everything. Everything we take in can be depleting - food, relationships, careers, exercise routines, everything. It's all connected - imbalance in one area can cre… Continue

Hi Jody, welcome to Iowa Avenue. Your story is inspiring on many levels--certainly least of which is where you decided to take matters into your own hands and determine both your physical and other needs into the present--not into some far-away dream. Looking forward to your participation at this wonderful and supportive community.
